In this nine hour, 2 day class, you will learn how to make a beautiful velour felt vintage-style hat, working with wooden puzzle blocks from my personal collection. Students will use a steamer and ropes to shape the hat body over a carved form that is specially designed to separate into 4-5 sections for removal of the blocked material. Most of my puzzle blocks date to the 1940’s and 1950’s and result in berets, toques, stingy-brim boaters, and cocktail hats.

The class fee of $275 includes most supplies. Students will need to bring outer trims (ribbon, feathers, etc.) Puzzle blocks have unique, sculptural shapes so trims are typically kept at a minimum.

Previous hand sewing skills strongly recommended.

PLEASE NOTE: On Saturday, January 18th we will meet from 2-5 pm to choose forms and block the felt. It will dry overnight and then we will work on Sunday, January 19th from 10 am – 5 pm to finish the hats.

We will take a 1 hr lunch break on Sunday.
