HAT MAKING FOR STAGE AND SCREEN: HOLLYWOOD OF THE 30s AND 40s

October 5 - December 14

Weekly.

What you will learn

Explore the hat shapes of the 30’s and 40’s using blocked felt or flat felt cut patterns. The films of this period are rich in their capturing of the fashions of the time for both men and women and provide a wealth of reference material for the variety of hat shapes and use of trimmings of all kinds. You can create either historical reproductions of hats or modern day hats inspired by this period. The course is suitable if you are interested in making vintage headwear for a wide variety of purposes: theatre, film, media, or simply to look fashionable.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • to develop hat designs of the 30Æs and 40Æs
  • to block felt
  • to develop patterns
  • to use trims appropriate to the period using suitable materials
  • to finish hats of this period using professional techniques
