Leather & Lace Hats Workshop
August 9 - August 11
This three-day class will combine two of contemporary millinery’s most exciting materials. Instructor Laura Whitlock will guide students through a variety of methods including blocked leather, lace overlays andstiffened lace trims.
- Day One: We’ll begin with the basics of seclecting and handling leather speciafically for millinery use. Next, students will learn how to block leather through the process of creating a button or pillbox shape on a small block or found object. We will also explore using leather under lace.
- Day Two: We will focus on using leather to create trims, including flowers, foliage and feathers. And how to add traditional decorations for leather, such as studs, buckles, self-braids and tassels. We’ll also techniques for sizing and wiring lace, which can then be used to create intricate trims for our leather chapeaux.
- Day Three: Laura will quide students through the completion of their hats, with emphasis on high-quality interior finishes, unquie couture lings and the neccessary accessories to hold the hat in place.
This class is designed for students with some sewing skills. Ms. Whitlock will aid in guiding students to choose a project commensurate with their skill level.
