In this one-day workshop, students will learn techniques for neatly finishing brim edges for both straw and felt hats. We will discuss how to measure, join and sew on millinery wire, as well as choosing the appropriate type and gauge of wire for the project. I will demonstrate how to hand-roll edges, how to bind edges with grosgrain ribbon and bias fabric, and how to properly cut and prep raw edges.

Students will choose four of the six techniques taught, and will complete several samples in order to practice and perfect brim edges.

Note: This is a technique-based course (as opposed to project-based) so you will be working on brims only and not making a finished hat.

Previous hand sewing skills recommended.
