STITCHED STRAW BONNETS
July 7, 2018 - July 14, 2018
Dates: 7-14 JULY 2018
Teacher: JANE SMITH
Location: CHATEAU DUMAS, Nr Toulouse, FRANCE
Jane Smith’s career spans more than 40 years in film and theatre and she has developed an unrivalled knowledge of hat construction and an enviable array of millinery skills. Jane has a particular skill for working with straw braid and in this workshop you’ll choose to create either a contemporary straw hat of your own design (using a pattern or hand-moulded) or an authentic 19th century Jane Austen-style bonnet using strip straw plaits and buckram.
You’ll stitch by machine and by hand during the workshop, both straw-to-straw and straw to buckram, and learn how to create and cut patterns for more structured hats using sinamay and buckram. Lining hats, wiring brims and fashioning trimmings using ribbon and lining material will also be covered.
This workshop is suitable for any level including beginner although a familiarity with a sewing machine would be useful.
