Versatile Wire Frames Workshop

April 2, 2020 - April 4, 2020

The creation of wireframes may be the most versatile of all millinery techniques.  Crafted of millinery wire covered with fabric or wrapped with a variety of materials, they can be the basis of everything from traditional transparent hats to avant-garde masterpieces.  Wire cutters, pliers and basic sewing notions are the only tools needed to create these wide-ranging chapeaux!

In this three-day workshop, milliner Laura Whitlock will guide students through the process of creating, covering and finishing one wire-frame hat. Students may choose to create a traditional fabric covered hat; an artistic, wrapped hat; or something that combines the two. Wireframes also make a wonderful base for stiffened lace hats.  Perhaps you’ve noticed this major millinery trend recently on the runway, at the racecourse, and on the street? You can use your new skill for creating these lovely shapes as well.

Ms. Whitlock has put together a Pinterest board of example images of “Wire-Frame Hats” to help students better understand the concept.

SKILL LEVEL: This class is designed for students with a broad range of skills, from beginner to advanced.  Ms. Whitlock will aid in guiding students to choose a project commensurate with their skill level.
