Carving Hat Blocks

September 6, 2018

Carve a headblock and many other shapes in this one day class. This is a great skill to have, and allows you to expand your blocking inventory with a minimum of cost. You will be able to carve several blocks during the one day course. The blocks are carved from high quality polystyrene foam and can provide years of use, both for creating and displaying hats. It is not as messy as one expects it to be. We do suggest wearing a bib apron, however. The block carving technique gives you freedom to carve to your own head size, allowing your creativity free reign. Examples of other shapes and finishing techniques will be discussed. We will not do any blocking on the shapes to allow students more time for carving

The goal of this workshop is to provide students with beginner skills in hatmaking. Traditional wooden blocks can run into money and although the styro blocks will not last at long as wooden, they can be used for years with the right care. You will go home with at least one hand carved headblock and most likely many other crowns and brims.
