$40 Materials Fee payable to the instructor on the first day in person.
Includes: ½ yard of Jinsin straw, millinery grosgrain ribbon, and millinery wire.
Step into the world of sculptural millinery and learn how to transform Jinsin, a beautifully woven straw fabric, into a striking hat. Also known as Buntal, this unique material is crafted from the fine fibers of unopened talipot palm tree stalks and handwoven in the Philippines. With its ability to hold bold, fluid curves, Jinsin is perfect for creating elegant, architectural headwear.
After viewing an inspirational slideshow, you’ll discover how to shape, sculpt, and manipulate Jinsin to design a custom piece that blends style and sun protection. Whether you prefer a dramatic turban or a chic, minimalist visor, you’ll gain hands-on experience working with this dynamic material.
Outcome: Walk away with a beautifully crafted, ready-to-wear Jinsin hat or visor—perfect for sunny days with a touch of artistic flair.
Basic machine stitching skills required, though this workshop involves mostly hand stitching.
6 students maximum, to allow for personalized attention.
Specialty Class Cancellation Policy : 48 hour notice for class credit or refund. No-shows and cancelations with less than 48 hours notice will not be refunded or credited.
Instructor: Jasmin Zorlu has been a milliner for 35 years, specializing in freeform blocking—a technique that sculpts felt and straw into one-of-a-kind Art Deco-inspired hats. She fell in love with millinery while studying Art History and Studio Art at the University of Michigan, later earning a degree in Accessory Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Jasmin has taught at Parsons School of Design and has led workshops in Michigan, Rhode Island, California, New York and Australia since 2001. She has also collaborated on capsule collections and worked as a freelance hat designer with Bay Area hat company Goorin Brothers. Her workshops offer a hands-on exploration of shaping and stitching unique, sculptural headwear.
