What you will learn

This course will encourage you to develop your own style whilst learning different techniques. You will be taught the various techniques necessary to create stunning headpieces. Using a variety of blocks, materials and finishes, learn professional techniques to bring your own ideas into reality. For high fashion or everyday hats for men and women, this course will introduce you to hat making at its very best. Beginners to the subject will be introduced to basic methods of production but if you have existing skills, you will be encouraged to research and develop your design skills alongside your technical abilities. All students will be encouraged to pursue their own project work where appropriate. The course is suitable for anyone interested in the subject. No experience is required although its desirable that students are able to use a sewing machine. Returning students may continue with their own projects.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • develop designs for fabric hats on buckram and paris net foundation
  • block and wire hats
  • use appropriate methods of construction
  • develop and use trims using appropriate methods and materials
  • apply a good finish to hats made from felt materials
