Create a Sinamay Straw Hat with Georgina Abbott – weekly

Course description:
Do you have a passion for hats and do you have ambitions to become a milliner?
This is a 7 week course where you will learn how to design and make a summer hat made from sinamay fabric (made from banana fibre). You will learn how to shape this very versatile materials using millinery blocks and finish it with traditional techniques.
Discover inspirational techniques for sinamay straw under the direction of milliner Georgina Abbott.
During this course, you will learn to shape sinamay into a summer hat with a brim using millinery blocks. You will also have the opportunity to learn trimming techniques specifically designed for this transparent and light fabric. You will cover the anatomy of a hat and how to fit them to heads of all shapes and sizes. You will learn through hands on demonstrations and guidance traditional millinery methods to finish off your hat ready for you to take it home and show off this summer.

What is Sinamay fabric?
Sinamay is a handwoven natural material made from woven banana plant fibres which is traditionally used for millinery. As a result, sinamay holds a very firm shape and because it is a natural fibre, it holds colour beautifully.

Who is this workshop for?
This course is a fantastic opportunity for those who are new to millinery and want to acquire a basic understanding. Basic hand sewing skills is required.

Do I need to bring anything?
Please bring along an apron. We will provide all the materials and equipment needed.
